why: are the shit. I was really pumped when I heard they made a video for this song ("Generator ^ 2nd Floor"). It's one of the best singles I've heard in a long time - definitely my choice for last year's song of the year (maybe tied with Manchester Orchestra's "I Can Feel a Hot One")... but either way check out the new vid.

I'm liking these weekly things I've been trying to do lately... keeps me up on my shit, so here's a chance for you to settle the debate I've been having with friends and myself lately...

Last year's debut from Freelance Whales ('Weathervanes') is being rivaled in terms of incredible musicianship, performance and style by this year's debut from Local Natives ('Gorilla Manor')... and it's pretty hard for me to choose a favorite. Who would you take?

why: because their DEBUT release 'Weathervanes' is the best thing I've heard this year since Manchester Orchestra's 'Mean Everything to Nothing'... and that's based on the first listen alone. These guys are musicians. Ever-changing vocal melodies are harmonized with a background choir that you have to squint your ears to hear over the remarkable instrumentation. This is a chill CD... go take a little nap and put on your earphones and just relax - You absolutely need to hear this album. I can't imagine the things to come once they get signed and produce properly funded records... Watch out.
