Read All About It - Armor for Sleep

who: Armor for Sleep
why: has [prematurely?] broken up after a solid eight year run. Here's the statement they issue on their Myspace blog yesterday:

"it's been a little over a year since our last tour and some of you out there have kind of figured out whats been going on with us. we never wanted to burden you all with a formal announcement of any kind and cause some type of commotion- we just thought it would be better to kind of drift away nice and easy… i am writing this strictly speaking for myself and i honestly don't really know how pj anthony and nash will react to me being the one to write this, but i feel like it should come from me because ultimately it was me who decided it was best to leave things where they were. to me a song is like a snapshot of a moment, real or made-up, and the band that takes that snapshot is like a camera. i was really happy and proud of the pictures that came out of our little camera, but i would have much rather put in on a shelf for me and all of us to look at with fond memories than to feel this intense need to make it take high-def panoramic mosaics when maybe it was constructed to handle polaroid film. it's as simple as that. i guess someone could examine our inter-personal relationships and weird habits and attribute them to the reason for this decision, but we were like brothers and no clash was ever too great to slow us down. i hope that time won't obscure that fact…i know it won't for me. that being said, i think the real and only reason i am writing this is for you who have been fans of armor for sleep. even though it hasn't been a secret that we are not working on an album or touring, it has felt really weird to not come out and say that the needles been lifted from the record. you have always been so amazing to us and i know through all of our fancy little internet avenues we will always be able/willing/not creeped out/ to talk about life, death, armor tabliture, the needler, whatever your little hearts desire. pj anthony and nash are all amazing people who i've witnessed first hand probably more than anyone in the world as being super talented at whatever they do and i know whatever they choose to do will be amazing. i know you'll have their backs just as i will. as for me, i have been hard at work cooking something up. i have a new camera. i never like to blab about stuff until its ready and for this reason i wasn't giving play by play updates when it was still in its complete infancy…but i will get into it more very soon. i'm really excited, and for me as someone who has been working a long time at the art of writing songs and having these weird visions about how i see a band being presented, i feel like i've put lots of pieces together from the terabytes worth of experiences i've lived through…i know some people will probably always want to hear dream to make believe or something no matter what i'm doing, which is fine, but time is an arrow and i'm not going to try and argue with that…i know i will always be myself and no matter what camera i'm behind i know you'll always recognize the hands holding it. thank you to everyone who's been supportive and listened to anything i've been a part of in any facet. i can't wait to tell you more about things to come. Check back in about a week for something new…"

Watch Out - Breakfast at Sulimays ep. 36

who: Breakfast at Sulimays (woodshopfilms)
why: alright so this another YouTube channel dealy I subscribe to, and most of them are hilarious. Basically it's a panel of three old people who are usually subjected to listening to new and upcoming music. Because they're frivolously old and right in their ways, they usually say it's all a bunch of crap (that's why it's funny). In this particular episode, they watch the music video for MGMT's "Kids" instead and dislike it even more. For anyone who hasn't seen this video, I personally think it's awesome but it's pretty controversial and you should watch it and get your own opinion first. Either way, Breakfast at Sulimays is hilarious.

Watch Out - The Roots

who: The Legendary Roots Crew
why: released a video for their latest single "How I Got Over" about a month ago and I just saw it for the first time. Seriously... if you don't like The Roots there's something unforgivably wrong with you. Go Phillies!

DUDE! - Alice Goodwin and Bianca Knight

who: Alice Goodwin and Bianca Knight
why: because I came across these pictures of these ridiculously fine ladies posing as boxers in Maxim and felt the need to start a new thread... and I'm a nice guy so I'm sharing them with all of you. Click the LINK for full-size pictures if you just can't help yourself.

you're welcome.

Watch Out - Kasabian

who: Kasabian
why: because they wanted a fresh, new way to promote their newest album - so they made a video. Also because I couldn't find anything more "blogworthy" than this to talk about today, and who doesn't love a British accent?

Their new album 'West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum' was released in June - check it out! If you're curious, the song sampled in the video is the first song off the record, titled "Underdog".

Read All About It - Attack Attack!

who: Attack Attack!
why: because frontman and screaming vocalist Nick Barham has "non-explosively" left the band. This sucks, because I hate when bands breakup... it seems like the music never comes out the same. Bands like Emarosa, Dance Gavin Dance, A Skylit Drive just to name a few off the top of my head have suffered because of lost members. On the other hand, bands like Blessthefall and The Fall of Troy have been able to overcome losses like these with new gains and in some instances, an improved sound.

The main thing that I'm not really feeling with this change is that instead of replacing Nick with someone new, Caleb (keys/programming) is gonna take the frontman posish and replace the performance of live keys with an iPod (sampled). I'm personally hoping it'll just be a temporary sacrifice and they find someone new, because I love the fact that there are six of them making such layered, aggressive music.

Premature Infatuation - Circa Survive

who: Circa Survive
why: because I just now got the November edition of Alternative Press
and am excited to see that they're reporting Circa Survive is currently in the studio working on a new LP. I'm little skeptical after reading the article, though because:

1) it's being recorded by Atlantic Records
2) produced by David Bottrill (Tool, Muse)
3) Anthony Green says, "I feel like I'm screaming more on this album - not Brokencyde screaming, but Led Zeppelin-style screaming. Some of the songs are really weird and non-traditionally structured. They're just movements without repeating parts, without a chorus or a verse... some very straightforward, old-school rock 'n' roll."

so it's clear that they're trying to achieve a different un-Circa Survivish sound, that I'm not sure they'll pull off.

As of now the album is untitled and there is no definitive release date - just slated for sometime next year. Be on the look out!

I had no idea these were being filmed until now, but you can go to circasurvive.com to view their TEN studio updates. Here's the latest:

Q&A - Dustin Kensrue of Thrice

Waffle Fries - This Time Next Year

who: This Time Next Year
why: because they're smart. They understand what's going on right now, and I appreciate sensible people. Following in the steps of Radiohead's 'In Rainbows' release, This Time Next Year has released their debut album 'Road Maps & Heart Attacks' through what they're calling the "Pay What You Want" program. This gives YOU the ability to download their album for whatever price you want: you can pay anything from $0 - $100,000 for it. Radiohead made millions off of this promotion and literally everyone and their mother has that CD - granted: they're Radiohead.

But I think what's most important is that they're getting there music out there LEGALLY and people don't have to feel like thieves because they want to listen to some new tunes. I'm a broke college student, and if I bought every album I wanted - I'd have to do illegal things to come up with the money anyway.

Bands put up a few singles on their myspace for you to stream for free, but if you don't like the rest of the album once you're swayed into buying it, you just wasted 10 bucks! So I think these guys have the right idea. Most bands don't make that much money through their CD sales anyways (which is why I'm surprised Equal Vision went along with it), but this way people will here the music, go to shows, buy merch and anticipate new releases, so for this I thank This Time Next Year for not being driven by the dollar and instead focusing on what's really important - the music.

These guys are a pretty solid pop-punk band and you should definitely go donate even $1 to these guys for doing something bold. Maybe in the future some of your favorite bands will follow suit. DOWNLOAD HERE!

New Release Tuesday - October 20, 2009

who: Converge | Russian Circles
why: because this week, if you want something hard and angry or melodic and soothing you can pretty much take your pick. Converge are hardcore veterans who have withstood the rapidly evolving industry and are trying desperately to make your ears bleed in today's release 'Axe to Fall'.

Russian Circles are one of about three instrumental bands I actually care about. These dudes are musicians and they know what they're doing. 'Geneva', their third full-length release is musical expression to the T, you need to check it out.

But a Goodie - The Early November

who: The Early November

Watch Out - Kanye West and Spike Jonze

who: Kanyeezy and Spike Jonze
why: because at this point I'm all over anything Spike Jonze and I don't care about Taylor Swift anymore. She should feel bad for Kanye.

Update: Alright, so the full video on vimeo got taken down... so here's the best version I could find on YouTube. It cuts out the first few minutes in the beginning though, so if you want to watch it in its' entirety, it is on YouTube split into two links below.

Eyegasm - Where the Wild Things Are

who: Where the Wild Things Are and Spike Jonze
why: because it was a perfect Jonzeian? representation of the children's book I used to have to be on a waiting list for at my elementary school. I loved everything about it. Some people will probably think it's a little slow, especially since there are a lot of moments with little dialog or music at all... but it made me miss my Mom, so you know it's good. Read All About It - Continuance

who: Continuance and Rise Records
why: Rise is continuing their expansion and have just announced their signing of Indiana-based hardcore band Continuance. They have some rather messy recordings up on their myspace, but hopefully Rise can help em lay down some killer recordings for their album which is set to be released sometime in Spring of 2010.

WE'LL DO IT ACOUSTIC! - Portugal. The Man

who: Portugal. The Man
why: this is a relatively old video for things I tend to post on here, but I keep finding it in different places, and I like it a lot, so I decided to post it. Also, for Josie, because they're touring in Europe soon and I failed to give you their CDs, you should at least watch this. I'm convinced you'll fall in love with JBG (guitar) faster than you can say "bullocks".

Read All About It - Blink 182

who: Blink 182
why: because you will always remember how hot the nurse on the 'Enema of the State' album cover was, and now they're releasing it on vinyl. 500 of these are set to be printed in four different styles (2000 total), and you can bet die-hards will go crazy to get their hands on one. Independent punk/hardcore label Mightier Than Sword Records will be releasing them December 1st, but they will be on sale October 19th (next Monday).

Premature Infatuation - Say Anything

who: Say Anything
why: because they screwed you and pushed back 'Hate Everyone' and they wanna say they're sorry? They've just posted "Eloise" from said album... my favorite of the two sneak peeks, but I'm still not sure if it's gonna match '...Is a Real Boy'. Bemis is still one of my favorite lyricists because of that album, so be sure to check out 'Hate Everyone' when it comes out November 3rd.

tf presents - these girls fall like dominos (autumn.oh.nine)

who: me
why: I decided to follow in the footsteps of another and make a mix of some songs to get me geared up for the current fall weather. It's time to take it down from the riotous anthems of summer and class it up for a leaf-crunching walk on the quad. Think slower, buzzy, temperately sad but uplifting... cool, fresh and clean. Mmm. I don't miss Summer even a little bit.

Eyegasm - Zombieland

who: Zombieland
why: it was like a funnier, action-packed, white men can't jump better version of Adventureland. The similarities are hard to ignore. Lead actor... check. Similar (but better) female actor... check. Amusement Park... check.

Not quite as good as Shaun of the Dead, but it wasn't trying to be... it was just a solid, good movie that I'll definitely watch again, and sometimes the subtle quiet ones are the ones that stick out.

Rating: fasho.

Premature Infatuation? - Dashboard Confessional

who: Dashboard Confessional
why: I'm not sure if I really care, but their new single "Belle of the Boulevard" is now streaming on their myspace. If you're a big fan, then you're looking forward to November 10th, when their cd 'Alter the Ending' will be in stores.

Boycottage - Twilight: New Moon (cont.)

New Release Tuesday - October 6th

On the most anticipated day for quite some time, it was kind of easy to forget to write it all down on the intranets.

why: because these two have been on my radar since the end of last year, and they're finally out! The Fall of Troy's 'In the Unlikely Event' is completely different from what you should probably expect, especially considering it's following last year's revolutionary (at least for me) 'The Phantom on the Horizon'.

HORSE is like a loyal puppy that could never disappoint you. The more ridiculous the more undeniably entertaining. 'Desperate Living' is out today.

You absolutely must listen to both of these.

Fool for Thought - lala.com

who: lala.com
why: because we should have seen it sooner... Every day we're finding new ways to keep the internet and anything else we can as close as possible. Think of the future... True "nano" ipods, and cell phones that fit into your ear and allow you simply to think about turning them on right?..

Nah. I'll take a cell phone that can give me internet access to any song I've ever wanted, though. CDs and Vinyls are cool to have, but eventually I'm gonna run out of room. And recently, my hard drive got screwed up and I lost most of what I really cared about owning... the mp3s from the albums so I could actually listen to them.

So look. Here it is. Lala.com allows you to buy an "Online Album" of The Fall of Troy's newest album 'In the Unlikely Event' for only $1.08, OR the mp3 version for $7.49. $1 sounds good, so you buy the online version, but shit that means you have to be on the internet to listen to it? Yeah... but what if you could somehow get really good internet on your phone that would load lala for you no problem?... Yeah it's probably gonna happen.

Lawyered?

New Thread - "..."

Premature Infatuation - Vampire Weekend

who: Vampire Weekend
why: because I've somehow managed to ignore Vampire Weekend until now, when I have a song about horchata stuck in my head... Their new release 'Contra' will be released January 12th of next year.

'Horchata'
