THE TEN

Let's face it... Being an awful studier has made me a great procrastinator. In one hour I will be taking the last final exam of my college career, and while I should definitely be studying - I'd rather remember caring more about music than my grades. Here's the latest installment of my RYM lists - THE TEN. albums that I would recommend to anyone. VOTW - May 12, 2010

who: Local Natives
why: just recently debuted their new video for "World News" on Pitchfork... I just love this band, there's not much else to say.

Monday, May 10, 2010

Bundle Up - B.o.B.

who: Tyler Ward ft. Eppic
why: YouTubers, ftw. This video's a little bit overproduced, but still awesome.

WE'LL DO IT ACOUSTIC! - The Dangerous Summer

who: The Dangerous Summer
why: because I haven't posted anything in awhile... been kinda busy. This is the first thing I've seen in some time I felt was worth posting. If you don't know The Dangerous Summer... think of a more layered and technical version of The Starting Line. I like em.

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

Attention! - Los Campesinos!

who: Los Campesinos!
why: because they're from the U.K. and say things like "fanks" when they mean "thanks"... No, in all seriousness these guys have taken over my ears lately. I just can't get enough.

If you watch/listen to the video/song below and aren't impressed, give the album a few listens anyway, it's a grower fashower. I had the same "ehh... whatever" impressions when I first checked them out a while back - didn't really get the interest - but I'm all over it now.

You're lookin at a new #1 for 2010.

Saturday, April 24, 2010

VOTW - April 24, 2010

Bundle Up - You, Me and Everyone We Know

who: You, Me and Everyone We Know
why: cover one of the best songs of all time... I seriously love this song, haha.

Premature Infatuation - The Other Guys

who: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Samuel L. Jackson
why: ...it's Mark fucking Wahlberg. The Other Guys will be released August 6th.

Bundle Up - Team Coco

who: Conan O'Brien
why: performs a naturally hilarious rendition of Radiohead's "Creep". I miss the shit out of you Coco... hope TBS doesn't kill you. It even sounds like a disease...

Monday, April 12, 2010

Attention! - Titus Andronicus

who: Titus Andronicus
why: because they've been around since 2005, but they're new to me. I've just run through my first listen of this year's release 'The Monitor', and I can already tell it's going to grow on me. Think Desaparecidos meets Japandroids meets Silversun Pickups... or something like that. This album, inspired by the puzzling combination of the Civil War and a broken heart, is already on its way to making a run for album of the year in my book.

tf: absolutely.

Premature Infatuation - B.o.B.

who: B.o.B. ft. Hayley Williams (Paramore)
why: because she went hip-hop, and I kinda like it. Anyone else? B.o.B's album 'B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray' drops April 27th.

WE'LL DO IT FOR THE KIDS!

who: Beach House and Fang Island
why: keep em off the street with music. God knows we don't need more kindergarteners smoking pots.

Friday, April 9, 2010

VOTW - April 9, 2010

who: Freelance Whales
why: are the shit. I was really pumped when I heard they made a video for this song ("Generator ^ 2nd Floor"). It's one of the best singles I've heard in a long time - definitely my choice for last year's song of the year (maybe tied with Manchester Orchestra's "I Can Feel a Hot One")... but either way check out the new vid.

WE'LL DO IT ACOUSTIC!
Suck it Dex, this is a pretty solid live version.

Thursday, April 8, 2010

Watch Out - Letting Up

who: Letting Up Despite Great Faults
why: because I'm digging the whole shoegaze, electrically-buzzy genre lately and these guys do it best. This WAS going to be tomorrow's video of the week, but it got replaced... which means you're in for a treat tomorrow. With that said, this video is adorable.

Wednesday, April 7, 2010

Watch Out - Circa Survive

who: Circa Survive
why: have released the first video off of their soon to be released 'Blue Sky Noise' for "Get Out". I can't wait to hear this album. Get it in stores April 20th or preorder it here.

Premature Infatuation - Dinner for Schmucks

who: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis
why: because I missed Brick from Anchorman. And now he's back. Coming to theaters July 23rd.

Watch Out - Weezer

who: Weezer
why: have posted a new video for "I'm Your Daddy" from last year's 'Raditude'. Weezer F Baby.

Tuesday, April 6, 2010

LMAO! - Auto-Tune the News #11

who: Auto-Tune the News #11 (schmoyoho)
why: because it's the best thing Joel Madden (Good Charlotte) has ever done.

WE'LL DO IT ACOUSTIC! - The Temper Trap

who: The Temper Trap
why: perform their song "Sweet Disposition" (aka "the song from 500 Days of Summer") down in Texas on a break from SXSW.

Bundle Up - Manchester Orchestra

who: Manchester Orchestra
why: had two songs remixed for an Alternative Press feature. Check em out below as P.O.S. adds some flavor to "Shake It Out" and Simon Illa speeds up "Tony the Tiger"

Watch Out - The Devil Wears Prada

who: The Devil Wears Prada
why: have released a video for one of my favorite song titles of all time - "Assistant to the Regional Manager" off of their 2009 release 'With Roots Above and Branches Below'. This video reminds me a lot of Converge's recent video for "Axe to Fall" except a lot less creepy.

Monday, April 5, 2010

Premature Infatuation - Maps & Atlases

who: Maps & Atlases
why: because after releasing two of the best EPs I've ever heard, they've finally planned a full-length debut. If you don't have any idea who I'm talking about... you have a lot to catch up on. 'Perch Patchwork' is set for release on June 29th.

WAFFLE FRIES: Download their new song "Solid Ground"

WE'LL DO IT LIVE! - Manchester Orchestra

who: Manchester Orchestra
why: because I missed them when they came through Chicago a few weeks ago... I'm an idiot. Check out those drum lights. Epic.

Thursday, April 1, 2010

VOTW - April 4, 2010

who: Monsters of Folk
why: Conor Oberst. nuff said.

WE'LL DO IT LIVE! - Coheed and Cambria

tastyflapjacks: claudio sanchez involved in freak parasailing accident.

Yeah, I know. I'm bad at April Fools' jokes. If you fell for that, today's gonna be PRETTY rough for you.

who: Coheed and Cambira
why: because their new album, 'Year of the Black Rainbow' will be released April 13th... here's an acoustic rendition of my favorite track from the album - "Here We Are Juggernaut".

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

Premature Infatuation - Kick-Ass

who: McLovin, Nicholas Cage, Clark Duke
why: it's the next movie I'm looking forward to... I don't care how terrible it is, I'm 93% sure I'll like it anyways. Premiering in theaters on April 16th, Rotten Tomatoes has it currently listed at a 95% with 20 fresh previews and surprisingly only 1 rotten.

LMAO! - Duncan Rocks

who: Duncan Rocks from dandobi
why: Episodes 3 and 4. It's stupid. That's the point.

WE'LL DO IT ACOUSTIC! - ADTR

who: A Day to Remember
why: have been on this acoustic binge lately... and I'm not sure I'm the biggest fan of Jeremy's softer vocals unplugged, but I can't help it - I still love these dudes. ADTRFTW.

Friday, March 26, 2010

VOTW - March 26, 2010

who: Kid Cudi
why: is the gd man. Check out this, his latest video for "Soundtrack 2 My Life" off of last year's 'Man On the Moon: The End of Day'.

Thursday, March 25, 2010

Q&A - Nard Dawg

who: Ed Helms
why: aka Andy Bernard, aka Nard Dawg, aka Dr. Faggot was on Leno. Don't boo me Team Coco.

Attention! - The Kissaway Trail

who: The Kissaway Trail
why: so I've been hella slacking on the blogosphere lately... and it's for a good reason - SPRING BREAK! But I had to post this, because I was with my friend Matt checkin out The Temper Trap last night at the Metro and these dudes were the opening group... and fresh from Denmark - they owned. Seriously, every song sounded like the epic ending to a Spike Jonze movie or something... and I got the album immediately. So should you.

Here's the only music video I found on the YouTubes for their song - "SDP"

Thursday, March 18, 2010

Premature Infatuation - Hot Tub Time Machine

who: Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry, Clark Duke, Chevy Chase, John Cusack
why: uhh... because it looks hilarious. Check it out next Friday, the 26th.

Wednesday, March 17, 2010

Attention! - Twin Atlantic

who: Twin Atlantic
why: is an energetically charming quartet from Glasgow, Scotland that I was lucky enough to see on tour last week when they opened for The Fall of Troy, and these dudes brought it. It was the first show of the tour, their first time in America I believe, and they were jet lagged as a mother but put out an amazing show anyways. Their the first band I've heard in a long time that I genuinely have fun listening to, and if you're not impressed with the tracks upon first listen - go see them live and let me know if you've changed your mind. Their latest 8-song EP titled 'Vivarium' came out last year. Go get it!

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Watch Out - A Day to Remember

who: A Day to Remember
why: have been taking a lot of heat on the interwebs lately... and I don't know why. People keep trying to make comparisons to Four Year Strong, but I know for a fact they don't give a shit what you think they sound like if you're drinking that gay-torade (it's funny cuz they're from Florida)... Also how has no one else ever made that joke? These dudes have fun playing the music they make, and if you've seen them live you'll understand why their fans love them so much. But anyways, I'm done ranting. Check out their new video for "I'm Made of Wax Larry, What Are You Made Of?" off of last year's 'Homesick'.

New Release Tuesday - March 16, 2010

This week's unrated notables:
[03.]
The Audition - 'Great Danger'
tf: ehhh.

It's all been downhill for me since 'Controversy Loves Company'... It seems like they've been focusing harder on making records than music, and it's honestly getting pretty old.

[02.]
Streetlight Manifesto - '99 Songs of a Revolution Vol. I'
tf: ehhh.

A good attempt at a cover album... but it's still a cover album. They're fun and I might listen to a track here and there, but the album as a whole doesn't really do it for me... and I don't see how anyone would be super excited to listen to a double-digit amount of covers at once. They're an awesome band - they just need to write some new stuff.

[01.]
From First to Last - 'Throne to the Wolves'
tf: aight.

Besides the fact that the quality of the recordings that I listened to were a little lacking, this is a pretty decent album. People used to love to hate Sonny, and will probably continue to hate this band - but I'm not into politicizing... I like how it sounds.

Next Week:

Monday, March 15, 2010

Watch Out - Of Mice & Men

who: Of Mice & Men
why: have put out the first video for their song "Second & Sebring" from this year's self-titled debut. Pretty gnar.

Watch Out - Manchester Orchestra

who: Manchester Orchestra
why: if you like em, just watch it.

Sunday, March 14, 2010

WE'LL DO IT LIVE! - Greg Holden

who: Greg Holden
why: because I haven't even watched this yet... but this dude is always dreamy. YouTube, ftw.

Saturday, March 13, 2010

tf presents: i love it all. (spring.2010)

It's technically 8 days early... but happy spring, peeps.

I wanna first give a shout out to my bff Manny who inspired me put these songs together. I stole the first two songs from one of his mixes, because they're basically perfect... but they're not meant to be taken too literally. I'm not mourning someone's death or anything quite so depressing, but we all know how much it sucks to lose something important to us. That's kind of the theme I had going in my winter mix, so I decided to keep it going and put together something of a sequel. You can let the story come to you, or just plain enjoy the songs if you wish, but either way I hope you like it.

[02.] Death Cab for Cutie - "Title and Registration"
[03.] Local Natives - "Airplanes"
[04.] The Temper Trap - "Sweet Disposition"
[05.] Straylight Run - "Existentialism On Prom Night"
[06.] Inkwell - "Shufflesaur"
[07.] Fleet Foxes - "Ragged Wood"
[08.] Freelance Whales - "Starring"
[09.] Now, Now Every Children - "Everyone You Know"
[10.] Kevin Devine - "The Only One"
[11.] Electric President - "Feathers"
[12.] Port O'Brien - "Sour Milk/Salt Water"
[13.] Wild Sweet Orange - "Seeing and Believing"
[14.] Minus the Bear - "Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse"
[15.] As Tall As Lions - "Love, Love, Love (Love, Love)"
[16.] The Forecast - "Life's a Garden, Dig It"

WE'LL DO IT LIVE! - Foxy Shazam

who: Foxy Shazam
why: they're crazily weird... but it'd probably be a pretty fun show. Here's their performance of a new song titled "Wanna Be Angel & Bye Bye Symphony".

Friday, March 12, 2010

Friday Flashback - Bayside

who: Bayside
why: one of my favorite bands of all time, I've been listening to this album a lot recently since I got their self-titled on reprinted vinyl in the mail the other day... soooooo good. Here's an acoustic performance of probably my favorite song from the record - "Montauk".

WE'LL DO IT LIVE! - Portugal. The Man

who: Portugal. The Man
why: holy hell these guys are amazing live... if you've never seen 'em, you need to. Here they are performing "The Dead Dog" off of their new album 'American Ghetto'.

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Thursday Night Fights - March 11, 2010

who: Coheed and Cambria
why: in anticipation for this year's prequel album 'Year of the Black Rainbow', I've decided to propose the question over which era of Coheed people prefer... I can't help but love Claudio Sanchez... the dude's hair has more charisma than you, but this whole "I can't decide what genre i'm in mix of metal riffs and mythologically epic vocals" thing is getting a little bit old. Anyone else miss old Coheed besides me?

"A Favor House Atlantic" - 'In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3' - 2003

VS.

"The Broken" - 'Year of the Black Rainbow' - 2010

WE'LL DO IT ACOUSTIC! - New Found Glory

who: New Found Glory
why: my last live video for the day... I promise? NFG take it back a ways and perform "Something I Call Personality". WHERE'S IAN?!

WE'LL DO IT LIVE! - Manchester Orchestra

who: Manchester Orchestra
why: because I've been going overkill on the live videos recently... and the latest addition is from Andy Hull and his boys' performance last night on Jimmy Kimmel. Every track on 'Mean Everything to Nothing' approaches perfection, but "In My Teeth" was one of the few I have yet to see live and I'm glad they hardened it a little for the performance. Any thoughts on the new drummer, or how cracked out the keyboardist always looks? I love everything about this band.

PS: who wants to go see them with me March 23rd at the Metro in Chicago?!

WE'LL DO IT ACOUSTIC! - Four Year Strong

who: Four Year Strong
why: JUST LOOK AT THAT BEARD! Seriously though... if you haven't listened to 'Enemy of the World' yet, get on that shit.

"One Step at a Time"

"Your Song"

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

WE'LL DO IT LIVE! - Freelance Whales

who: Freelance Whales
why: are no strangers to live performances. I'm jealous of those of you lucky enough to live in the Brooklyn area... you get free shows!!!

New Release Tuesday - March 9, 2010

So many musics.

This week's unrated notables:
[06.]
Before Their Eyes - 'Untouchable'
tf: nope.

Alright this is way, way poppier than I was expecting, but they earn points for the good production value, and it's actually pretty memorable even if you don't like it. I never listened to their 2008 release 'The Dawn of Their Death', and I guess I must have missed their contraction of the infamous scenester-pop disease that seems to be infecting the masses lately as well. This isn't doing it for me at all.

[05.]
The Bled - 'Heat Fetish'
tf: nahhh.

I didn't get very far into this release before I had already figured out I didn't like it. It's definitely not terrible, but I know I'll never get the urge to listen to it... Wasn't disappointed. Wasn't impressed. It's just not for me.

[04.]
Isles and Glaciers - 'The Hearts of Lonely People' EP
tf: aight.

I don't know what it is... but ever since Jonny left DGD, he hasn't sounded the same to me. He's obviously still probably technically one of the greatest vocalists in the business - he has the range of an R&B singer, it's a bit ridiculous... but I don't get the same intensity or passion from him that I used to, and it's disappointing. I don't really like the whole "super-group" idea either... unless it's The Sound of Animals Fighting, I guess... but nevertheless this EP is pretty solid and I'll definitely give it a few listens from time to time.

[03.]
House Vs. Hurricane - 'Perspectives'
tf: fasho.

I really, really wanted to like their 2008 EP 'Forfeiture', but I just never really got into it. I've listened to it a bunch of times, but it never really grabbed my attention entirely. When I listen to these guys, I can't help but compare them in my head to being a half a step below Sky Eats Airplane... and it's annoying to me that I can't like them as much as I want to. I have a sinking suspicion that 'Perspectives' will have the same effect. As of now, I' definitely like it, but I can't tell if it'll be enough to continue to spark my interest. I hope I can find the time to give it a few more listens... but I guess what I'm saying is I won't be surprised if I don't.

[02.]
We Were Promised Jetpacks - 'The Last Place You'll Look' EP
tf: fasho.

Keeping in mind that I'm a bit of a sucker for accents... this EP has a lot of potential to be a grower. Nothing too crazy to get overly excited about... short, simple, sweet and the first I've ever heard from these dudes... this could be my sleeper pick for this year's list.

[01.]
Four Year Strong - 'Enemy of the World'
tf: yaysh.

Yes. I've been waiting for this for what seems to have been forever. Since I first heard 'Rise Or Die Trying' I suppose, but mostly since there was talk that they were working on new material... which turned out to be 'Explains It All' instead of something actually worth listening to. Ouch? But now it's time. To listen to this until my eardrums can no longer handle the hardcore-infused pop-punk mastery. They can seriously own the genre in my opinion... Listen to "What the Hell is a Gigawatt?" You'll shit. I suggest you be prepared.

Next Week:
The Audition - 'Great Danger'
Envy on the Coast - 'LowCountry'
From First to Last - 'Throne to the Wolves'
Nas & Damian Marley - 'Distant Relatives'
Streetlight Manifesto - '99 Songs of a Revolution: Vol. I'
The White Stripes - 'Under Great White Northern Lights'

Monday, March 8, 2010

LMAO! - RAAAAAAAANDY

who: RAAAAAAAANDY (with eight A's)
why: because we all love to rip on Justin Bieber.

Saturday, March 6, 2010

WE'LL DO IT ADORABLE! - Now Now Every Children

who: Now Now Every Children
why: because I've never listened to them before... but the singer reminds me of a combination of Julia Styles and Mandy Moore... so I'm totally there.

Friday, March 5, 2010

VOTW - March 5, 2010

who: Person L
why: because I finally got around to listening to 2009's 'The Positives' once I saw this video. Nice face, Kenny. The facial hair doesn't make you look any less like a 12 year old, haha.

Friday Flashback - Portugal. The Man

who: Portugal. The Man
why: have been talked about all over the place lately, and you're probably sick of hearing about em. Their new release 'American Ghetto' is easily my favorite album since 'Waiter: "You Vultures!"' and you should definitely get to listening to it if you haven't. This brings us to this week's flashback - "AKA M80 the Wolf".

Thursday, March 4, 2010

NEW! Thursday Night Fights - March 4, 2010

I'm liking these weekly things I've been trying to do lately... keeps me up on my shit, so here's a chance for you to settle the debate I've been having with friends and myself lately...

Last year's debut from Freelance Whales ('Weathervanes') is being rivaled in terms of incredible musicianship, performance and style by this year's debut from Local Natives ('Gorilla Manor')... and it's pretty hard for me to choose a favorite. Who would you take?

Freelance Whales - "Generator ^ 2nd Floor" Live

VS.

Local Natives - "Wide Eyes", "Airplanes" and "Stranger Things" Live

Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Premature Infatuation - Punk Goes Classic Rock

who: The Almost
why: is one of the bands that will be on the new 'Punk Goes'... series, and I always highly anticipate these releases while they generally turn out terrible. I'm not the biggest fan of The Almost... I personally wish Aaron would have just kept making music with underOATH instead... BUT... the point is that this is a video showing The Almost's recording process of their track for the record - Tom Petty's "Free Fallin".

P.S.: Who the fuck is that playing drums?... noob. I'd rather listen to this kid.

Be sure to also check out an early, pre-production version of the song played LIVE here (Aaron on drums).

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Watch Out - Ok Go

who: Ok Go
why: are they so good at making music videos?! They already put out a video for this song! I can't handle it...

New Release Tuesday - March 2

Nothing really too crazy this week, AMERICAN GHETTO! AMERICAN GHETTO! AMERICAN GHETTO!, but stay tuned next week for Before Their Eyes, Broken Bells, Four Year Strong, Gorillaz, Ted Leo and more?

[02.]
Jaguar Love - 'Hologram Jams'
tf: unrated.

Another band I've been told to give a chance on multiple occasions that I have literally never heard... Listen to it? Apparently for fans of The Blood Brothers.

[01.]
tf: unrated.

Remember when they put out 'Satanic Satanist' last July? One of my favorite bands ever, this is the 6th full-length they've released in 4 years and they've put out 3 EP's in between. Get on their level. Quick.

Monday, March 1, 2010

Bundle Up - Ellie Goulding

who: Ellie Goulding
why: covering The Temper Trap's "Sweet Disposition".

WE'LL DO IT ACOUSTIC! - Kevin Devine

who: Kevin Devine
why: playing another new song("You Wouldn't Have to Ask") live for the cameras and you... I have that hoodie!

Saturday, February 27, 2010

Premature Infatuation - Lower Definition

who: Lower Definition
why: because literally right after releasing their amazing full-length 'The Greatest of All Lost Arts' in 2008, the band unexpectedly broke up. After months of frantically searching for the right mix of new faces, Lower Definition is back and recording. I felt like shit yesterday when I heard the news about The Fall of Troy... but this makes me feel a lot better. Go catch these guys playing with A Day to Remember if you're on the west coast, you lucky bastards.

My Heart Is Fucking Broken

"Dearest friends from all corners of the world,

I write to inform you that after nearly 9 years, 5 full-lengths, 2 bass players, hundreds of shows, and numerous other achievements and follies, Andrew, Frank, and I have decided to end our career as The Fall of Troy.

This band has been my life, my love, the air I breathe, the food I eat, and what helps me sleep (and sometimes keeps me up) at night. I love and cherish the music we’ve made, the times we’ve had, and all the great friends we’ve met along the way. Andrew, Frank, and of course Tim, will always and forever have a special place in my heart. But it has come time for us to call it a day. After everything’s said and done, there is no drama, there is no blow out, it’s simply the three members of this band are on three different paths in our lives.

I always hold true to the fact that it’s better to go out in style, to ride off into the sunset, than go down in flames. This tour coming up with Envy On The Coast and Twin Atlantic will be our last go round, and we really hope that all of you will come out and celebrate what has been so unreal and unbelievable – let’s dance one last time!

We would really like to thank everyone that’s ever been involved with the band, managed the band, booked a show for us, let us eat your canned food, sleep on your floor, asked us for a picture, caught me when I’ve almost been dropped, put out a record for us, driven us through a late night drive thru, or anything else any of you could possibly look back on and enjoy what this band was…Fun.

So make sure you come out to “The Marked-Men of 2010 Tour” as it will be our last hurrah! We love you, and will be giving as much love as you’ve given to us at these shows. So that’s that! We love you with all our hearts, thank you from the very bottom of them, and goodbye comrades.

R.I.P.
TFOT
2002-2010

With A Heavy Heart,
Thomas Joseph Erak

PS. I have no intention to stop making music! Quite the opposite actually – but until then see you at the shows!"

This sucks. I feel like my parents are getting a divorce... Thomas is undoubtedly sick of the struggling but highly talented musician route he's been accustomed to these past 8 years and I hate that I have the suspicion he's he's got plans for a new project that might actually allow him some stability, but that's what's wrong with the music industry. I could go on about this for days, but the point is bad artists are getting too much money, while the unique ones are stuck in an overly saturated bin of mostly underachievers. Music shouldn't have to be for the masses, but the industry makes it appear to be. There's not really much else to say other than GO SEE THESE GUYS LIVE ON TOUR WHILE YOU'RE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE THE CHANCE.
