why: because they're in the midst of their reunion tour and haven't played in 15 years with the original members. And they're awesome. Here they are performing "7" from their 1994 album 'Diary' on the Jimmy Fallon show last night.

Premature Infatuation - We Came as Romans
who: We Came as Romans
why: because they're one of the latest bands to be signed to one of my favorite record companies, Equal Vision, and have announced their first full-length release, 'To Plant a Seed' will be available November 3rd. Go listen!
New Release Tuesday - September 29th
who: weaksauce
why: because nothing can really compare to what's dropping next week (The Fall of Troy and HORSE the band). This week we have Omar Rodriguez Lopez with another release that'll likely end up being many layers of noise that people will claim is a "masterpiece". I personally think he doesn't have to put every single thing he writes down on a record... but maybe that's just me, and maybe I should actually listen to it before I say it sucks. Second we have Paramore. They made the cover of AP magazine this month and the article makes them out to be some sort of legendary revolution of genre fusion... I'm not gonna lie, I liked Riot!... and I liked playing Paramore songs on rock band even more, but I gave a listen to 'Brand New Eyes' and got nothing. I was waiting for it to be over. Wow, I just read this over and realized how harsh I'm being... point of the matter is that if you like Omar or Paramore, today might be a good day - but I'm just waiting for next week.

Boycottage - Twilight: New Moon
who: Twilight.
why: okay, okay, okay. Let me be the first to say that I have not seen the first movie in it's entirety... but I reeeeally don't think I need to. And even if I did, I wouldn't watch it with an open mind, and I'd still end up hating it. So I just don't like it. What bothers me most is that it's becoming a cult phenomenon and shows like TrueBlood as well as other authors are basically starting to get rich off the work someone else has already done (I don't know who he/she is... I don't care). I do know that Kristen Stewart sucks and that English dude is a tool. I also know that the bands who've opted to appear on the soundtrack are taking a risky position. Because while a lot of people like Twilight, a lot of people hate it, too.
bold = why?
italic underline = expected.
Soundtrack:
1) Death Cab for Cutie - "Meet Me On the Equinox"
2) Band of Skulls - "Friends"
3) Thom Yorke (Radiohead) - "Hearing Damage"
4) Lykke LI - "Possibility"
5) The Killers - "A White Demon Love Song"
6) Anya Marina - "Satellite Heart"
7) Muse - I Belong to You (New Moon)
8) Bon Iver & St. Vincent - "Roslyn"
9) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - "Done All Wrong"
10) Hurricane Bells - "Monsters"
11) Sea Wolf - "The Violet Hour"
12) OK Go - "Shooting the Moon"
13) Grizzly Bear - "Slow Life"
14) Editors - "No Sound but the Wind"
15) Alexandre Desplat - "New Moon (The Meadow)"
Hahaha.

Read All About It - Ben Gibbard and Jay Farrar
who: Ben Gibbard and Jay Farrar
why: because as if he isn't busy enough touring with Death Cab for Cutie or being newly wed to the beautiful Zooey Deschanel, Ben Gibbard has joined forces with solo-artist Jay Farrar to release the soundtrack for 'One Fast Move or I'm Gone: Kerouac's Big Sur' on October 20th. NPR music has been kind enough to allow your ears a free listen at a track off the record titled "These Roads Don't Move". Way too folky for my taste, and I'm not really anticipating the release per say, but anything Mr. Gibbard touches is good enough for me. If you'd prefer a visual representation of what to expect, you can check out the music video for "San Francisco" here.

Watch Out - Saosin
who: Saosin
why: because it's hard not to like their 2009 release 'In Search of Solid Ground' at least a little. Their sound hasn't changed too much since the old Anthony Green days in my opinion... maybe a little more chorus-geared and poppy... but still Saosinesque at least. Here's their first video for "Changing", check it out.
Premature Infatuation - HORSE the band
who: HORSE the mothereffing band
why: they've never let me down. They always surprise me. They put on one of the best live shows ever. On October 6th (2 weeks) they will be releasing 'Desperate Living' and I will definitely be listening to it. News has surfaced that if you buy the album from iTunes or vinyl at a later date you will be handsomely rewarded with ten bonus tracks. Yeah, 10. Fool for Thought - Downloading
I recently read a Punknews.org article about Muse's frontman Matt Bellamy's idea to wage a progressive usage tax on bandwidth. He claims that this would help solve the downloading "problem" and promote the expansion of "creative industries". I was in like what?... 5th or 6th grade when Napster hit the scene... and illegally downloading copyrighted material has only become easier as more programs, websites, etc. are making it more accessible. But what this has done for the music industry is what I'm really curious to know.
What I'm basically trying to say is what an old episode of South Park already said. Wealthy pop musicians are talented and work extremely hard, but they don't even write their own music most of the time and are making more money than my favorite 100 bands combined, if not more. And I personally feel like if we limit the ways in which music is available to the public, we're going to be stuck listening to Nickelback... Most of my favorite bands make next to nothing on their record sales anyways and are near completely dependent upon touring and merch sales, instead. I read an article in AP a few months back about how Bring Me The Horizon signed a less than fair contract with their label... and they're all pretty much broke. But they play music because it's what they love to do... and that's what makes it better than the shit they play on the radio. Because those artists are just trying to get paid.
Before iTunes, mainstream music sales were at an all time low. People saw no reason to go to Tower Records and pay $18.99 for the new Britney Spears album... and can you REALLY blame them? Now though, people are willing to pay $9.99 for a bad CD online and it's the smaller, underground bands that are being slighted. It's crazy how many talented musicians there are today, and how many talented bands those musicians are creating. New genres are constantly evolving at a ridiculous pace... and it's seriously impossible to keep up with everything. But what's the problem? I'm not going to public and say that I support illegally downloading music, or that I think there should be laws created against it, but I will say that Muse's Bellamy is being a bit ridiculous with his suggestions. There aren't even taxes on online sales, why would we write law to attempt to regulate bandwidth usage?
Honestly, I don't know if there is any way to know if illegal downloading is helping or hurting the music industry... it's extremely difficult to even wrap your mind around the economics of it all considering the shear amount of music that we're lucky enough to be surrounded by. But I do think this is a really important issue that needs to be discussed and some conclusions do need to be reached. What do you think?

New Release Tuesday - September 22nd, 2009
who: Brand New - Daisy
why: because I've been talking about it for awhile, and so has everybody else so if you wanna be cool you should go buy it. No. Because if you like Brand New, this album is almost as dramatically new as 'The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me' was in 2008. It really is a must have for this year because you'll probably either love it or continue to call them overrated.

Read All About It - Kanye West is a Meme
who: sxephil (Philip DeFranco) and Kanye West
why: If you don't know sxephil, he has a Youtube channel that's basically like a college student's popular culture Daily Show in 4 minutes a day. So recently, as you would expect, he's been talking a lot about Kanye West. He found all these pictures that people have edited making fun of Kanye's remarks, and even though I almost feel bad for him, you should see these cuz it's funny to laugh at others' expense, right?
That took forever.
LMAO - "Toxicity" on Violins

Premature Infatuation - Brand New
Eargasm: The Glass Ocean - Put On the Wooden Overcoat EP
who: The Glass Ocean
why: I love when independent bands put out ridiculously good music and it finally gets around to me a year later. Keller Harbin (former vocalist for Every Time I Die and The Chariot) wisely chose to team up with Joshua Beiser (former bassist for The Chariot) to create this post-hardcore ensemble that has sincerely been blowing my mind recently, and you need to check them out. Their 2008 release 'Put on the Wooden Overcoat' is the EP I'm speaking of, and you can, and should DEFINITELY, pick it up here for only $5. As of right now, they've rushed to the top of my list of albums for 2008 to #3 behind The Fall of Troy and Right Away Great Captain!, so it's safe to say they're in good company. Some people aren't so quick to jump on a 5-song EP as I am, but I'd take a short masterpiece over a drawn-out album any day.

who: Every Time I Die | Moneen | Muse

Moneen's anticipated album 'The World I Want to Leave Behind' is their fourth release, and their follow up of 'The Red Tree' in 2006. You can visit their myspace for a few tunes and get the record here if you like what you hear.
Lastly, we have Muse. I've taken a preview at their new album 'The Resistance' and I just don't like it. Musically, it sounds a bit repetitive and more industrial than even Muse needs to be, and some of the lyrics on it are just unoriginal. Die hards will probably still love this album, and Muse will probably always be one of the most influential bands of my time - I'm just not feelin this take. Get the album here.

LMAO - Kanye's a douchebag.
who: Kanye West
why: he's a douchebag. Don't ask me why, but I was watching the MTV VMAs and literally the first award was given to Taylor Swift for Best Female Video. So I'm not the biggest fan of her music, but she seems like a sweetheart and the look on her face when she won was sincere and adorable, so I was happy to see her win. Anyways... she gets up on stage to give her acceptance speech and fucking douchetool Kanye strolls up unannounced, takes the mic from poor Taylor and proclaims, "Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!". Thankfully, he didn't win any awards for the rest of the night I don't think, and people were booing the hell out of him. Less than a few hours after I saw that go down, a friend showed me this video.

Premature Infatuation - Where the Wild Things Are
when: October 16th, 2009 (rotten tomatoes)
why: There is so much to say about the anticipation of this movie, I don't even know where to start. We've all read the book. I remember fighting with kids in the elementary school library just to be on the waiting list to check out this book. Spike Jonze directing. An amazing, original soundtrack by Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and the Kids. And this kid Max Records is going to slay at the award shows, I'm telling you. I'm just really pumped all around to see it, and I don't know how much longer I can wait.

In the Fresh - Minus the Bear
who: Minus the Bear
when: October 5th - November 28th
why: Minus the Bear is the second band I care about today to announce they will be playing a short tour before the release of their new album! These guys are one of my all time favorite bands, and I have yet to see them live, so you can bet your ass I will be at the DeKalb, IL show on November 21st. If you don't know who they are, you've been living in a hole - as they were the first band to present math-rock to me in an acceptable form. Check out the tour dates here, listen to some music, and if you like em, buy my favorite release of theirs - 'Highly Refined Pirates'. It's a must have for everyone.
Here's their video for "Knights" off of their latest full-length 'Planet of Ice'
Watch Out - Pencil Beats
who: not quite sure.
why: cuz he crafted a song better than 98% of what you hear on the radio using only pencils, rhymes and pent-up frustration resulting from his boredom in history class.
In the Fresh - Lydia
who: Lydia
what: Final tour dates for songs from 'This Decemeber, It's One More Time and I'm Free' and 'Illuminate'
why: You need to go see these guys play. In the video below, they claim this tour will be your last chance to see them perform music from their first two full-length releases. 'Illiminate' is one of my favorite records to this day, and while I'm super excited they're going to be recording more NEW music for you and I to listen to, I'm definitely going to have to find a way to hear them play their old stuff before it's too late.

In the Fresh - Look Mexico
who: Look Mexico
why: They just announced their upcoming full-length album will be titled 'To Bed To Battle' as well as these September Tour Dates in New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Ohio, Illinois and Tennessee. If you have never heard of these guys you should definitely check them out on their myspace for new(er) music, or give a quick listen to 'You're Not Afraid of the Dark, Are You?' off of their latest EP Gasp Asp.
Boycottage - Rise Against
who: Rise Against announced they will soon begin work on a new album after their Australian tour ends in Febraury of next year.
why: I will admit that I actually liked one of their CDs... but after that every song started sounding the same. Now I don't even remember what that album was called or one memorable song title from it because their rise to "fame" turned them into pertentious douches.
Look at this album cover.
If you didn't laugh uncomfortably from how stupid this is... you're probably kind of a douche too.

Eargasm: As Tall As Lions - You Can't Take It With You
who: As Tall As Lions
when: released 'You Can't Take It With You' on August 18th of this year.
why: On my way back to school this weekend, I was feeling pretty relaxed and really wanted the bus ride not to suck so I listened to a variety of softer, ambient music. I started it off with dredg's 'El Cielo' (my favorite prog rock album) then moved to Explosions In the Sky's 'All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone' (my favorite instumental album) and finally arrived at As Tall As Lions' 2006 self-titled release... and I realized I loved this album, and have been neglecting it for far too long. I listened to it twice before I got back to my apartment, and on the walk to class this morning I felt I needed to give their newest release 'You Can't Take It With You' a full listen. And people, it's good. You definitely need to check it out. They have a way of balacing their albums with some extremely clear, delicate tracks as well as buzzy, chaotic songs that makes it extremely difficult to lose interest. I have it listed at #5 on the year for now, and if you're a fan of their sound, I'd be ridiculously surprised if you're disappointed.

who: Anthony Green on Last Call with Carson Daly
why: It seems only fitting that on the day Saosin releases their new album, I should post a live performance of Anthony Green's... cuz let's face it... It's just what he would want. This isn't particularly new... pretty sure this is from May(ish) of this year, but when I saw it I immediately felt bad that he's been reduced to following a washed-up Jerry Rice on a washed-up Carson Daly's late night TV show... but I don't judge people, so yeah no I didn't think that at all. But serioulsy he's on the verge of washing up. Here's "Baby Girl".

Fool for Thought - Music Videos
who: you and I
why: Total Request Live. You remember. It started in 1997... which puts me in... 3rd grade. After school, everyone watched this terrible hour of tv showcasing what we thought were the greatest songs around at the time. Wow, we were stupid. But it was fun! Around that time we had just been blessed with dial-up, lightning fast 56k internet and countless hours of AOL from those free discs we all stole from Walmart. We'd sign on the internet with our "basketballkid247" and "barbiedoll777" screennames and we would actually talk about how we couldn't believe Korn lost the number one spot to the fucking Backstreet Boys... lol.
But bands still make music videos! And nobody cares! MTV somehow is still "Music Television" despite the fact the only music they play comes through the videos they've slotted for 3am - 9am... conveiniently the exact same 6 hours I typically choose to sleep. What I'm trying to say is that I think I want my primetime videos back! The only problem is that they'd probably still choose to use that time playing awful music that I definitely should not be caring about... But c'mon let's be real here, we all know MTV has plenty of time to schedule music from all genres of music... we don't need to be watching 7 hours of "16 and Pregnant"... Maury is on everyday at 1pm.
Would you watch music videos again?
